Canyon Lake Texas (Texas Hill Country)

Real Pit BBQ,830-964-2619 at 14645 River Rd,juntion of FM 2673 in the Sattler area, is an example of the type of place that is pretty much unique to Texas. It has a covered outdoor eating area and carryout only with very good but not great Texas barbecue for a reasonable price. The menu is limited to a few common sides and white bread with pork, beef and chicken barbecue. The quality of the meat is consistently very good.

Fredericksburg Texas (Texas Hill Country)

Fredericksburg is an interesting town in the middle of Texas with a German Heritage, peaches, wineries, fascinating shops, good places to eat, a hotel shaped like a ship, a home town hero of an admiral from World War II, the Museum of the Pacific War and great hill country scenery. Don't miss it.

The Museum of the Pacific War, 830-997-8600 at 340 East Main Street, has expanded from the old Nimitz Hotel (where Commander of the Pacific Fleet Admiral Nimitz grew up) into additional buildings and grounds. Well worth a visit.

Fredericksburg Pizza Kitchen, 830-990-4044, located at 326 E Main St immediately next door to the Book Store of the Museum of the Pacific War, has only a little outdoor seating. As a carryout or delivery, the pizza is the best we tasted in the Hill Country. They will deliver to Fredericksburg RV Park. To avoid a long wait due to high volume, it is best to order some time other than Friday or Saturday night.

Craig's Charlie's Grill&Golf, 830-997-3533 at 714 S. Washington Street, has recently changed hands and no longer offers BBQ. It still has great grilled burgers at reasonable prices. Open for lunch 6 days a week and dinner Fri-Sat. Located next door to Fredericksburg RV park. There is a gate from within the park through the miniature golf course.

Lockhart Texas (Texas Hill Country)

Black's Barbecue, 512-398-2712 at 215 North Main Street, is open 8 days a week (according to the sign) with great authentic Texas Barbeque.
Authentic Texas Barbeque means it does have sauce on it and does not need any.
Black's has a sauce they can give you on the side, but the Traveling Morgans never needed any.
The turkey is absolutely wonderful, and the rest of the meat also. The sides are very good.
The history of Black's is wonderful.

Smitty's Barbecue, 512-398-9344 at 208 South Commerce, is the quintessential authentic Texas Barbeque.
Authentic Texas Barbeque means it does have sauce on it and does not need any.
Smitty's has a sauce they can give you on the side, but the Traveling Morgans never needed any.
The Traveling Morgans found Smitty's a little greasy for our taste.
Many people like it that way.
Smitty's closes early on Sunday.

Rockport Texas (Texas Coastal Bend)

The Texas Skimmer Boat, call 877 TX BIRDS and leave from the dock at Fulton, sailing under Captain Tommy Moore is the best way to see birds of the sea shore.
It is also one of the best ways to see dolphins we have ever experienced.
We saw far more Whooping Cranes than we could by visiting the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge by car.
Our trip with Captain Tommy was simply outstanding.

Turtle Bay Cafe, 361-729-0335 at 6520 Highway 35, is in a small nondescript building north of town.
It is the type of place many people will just pass by, unless a good friend recommends it.
It has great food and reasonable prices.

The one in San Marcos at 901 Texas 80 (512-393-3354) is excellent with quality food and reasonable prices.

The River Pub 512-353-3747 at 701 Cheatham Street is a great place for a good meal. You can overlook the recreation area on the San Marcos River with "tobers" and kayakers.

Tickle Blagg Animal Hospital, 512-353-1871, is across TX80 from Wal Mart at 1100 Highway 80.
It is a caring place for your pet.
Roscoe had surgery there and received excellent care.

Terlingua Texas (West Texas, near Big Bend National Park)

Starlight Theatre Bar and Restaurant, 432-371-2326 804 at 631 Ivey Road, is worth finding in the ghost town of Terlingua. The best food in the Big Bend area.

Wimberly Texas (Texas Hill Country near Devils Backbone)

Brewsters Pizza at 9595 Ranch Road 12, Ste. 4, 512-847-3299. Great pizza with whole wheat crust. They have others, but whole wheat pizza crust is hard to find and a good pizza with such a crust is very rare indeed.
