South Dakota Recommendations

When traveling in the Black Hills, you may find friendlier people than you may have expected. It is the rule for strangers to be treated like friends. It is easy to fall in love with the scenery, but the people are even more of a treasure.

Good customer service is the rule here rather than the exception. This is a listing of places that meet the high expectations we have as visitors to the Black Hills who have elected to come back often.

Box Elder

America's Mailbox is a great Mail Forwarding service for everyone with an RV. The Traveling Morgans us this service. They are located just outside Rapid City on the east and right on I-80 in Box Elder. Look for the largest American Flag in the state of South Dakota. They also run a basic RV park with very competitive pricing. 504 Americas Way, Box Elder SD 57719. 605-718-1234.

City of Custer

Baker's Bakery and Cafe is good for breakfast and lunch every day. We have not yet tried their dinner menu (dinner Fri, Sat, Sun only). Good food, large portions, reasonable prices. 541 Mount Rushmore Rd Custer, SD 57722. 605-673-2253.

SB Motor Parts. 700 Mt Rushmore Rd, Custer, SD 57730. 605-673-2139. If you need it for you vehicle, SB is the place to get it. Good folks.

Beaver Lake Campground. 12005 W. US. HWY. 16 - Custer, SD 57730. 605-673-2464 or 800-346-4383. One of the best run campgrounds we have ever seen. Improves every year. Good folks.

Leo's Tire and Auto Repair Good place for tires. Great prices. 1232 MT. Rushmore Road. Custer, SD 5773. 605-673-4477. You might have to wait a day for special tires to come from a warehouse, but service and prices are great.

Mac's Grub Good food. 631 Mt. Rushmore Road. Custer, SD 5773. 605-673-4477.

Lynn's Dakotamart because you want good local groceries. 800 Mt. Rushmore Rd, Custer SD 57730.

Custer Pizza Hut, We are not generally big fans of Pizza Hut, but the one in Custer is well managed, produces consistently good pizza, and has good value. 12193 U.S. 16, Custer, SD 57730. 605-673-3330

Destination Dentistry, Daniel L. Custis, D.D.S. and associates, are recommended by the Traveling Morgans for any dental needs in the Black Hills. They treated us like family. It is truly a case of world class dentistry meeting small town values. After being their customer the previous summer, we actually traveled here to get dental service from someone we trusted when we left California to go to Texas the following summer. Hill City

Desperado's Cowboy Restaurant is in a hewn log building from 1885. Great atmosphere and distinctive food, such as bison steak and bison roast. Not cheap, but great. Dinner only. 301 Main Street Hill City, SD, 57745. 605-517-1217.

Slate Creek Grill. Great burgers. Try the Bulk Burger (Elk and Bison). On 385/16 in Hill City. 605-574-9422.

Mitchell

Mitchell is East of the Missouri River (East River in the parlance of South Dakota). A good stop on the way to the Black Hills.)

Cabelas in Mitchell. The best place we have found to shop for outdoors related items.

Fire House Brewing Company As you might expect, a brew pub in an old firehouse. Excellent food and interesting ambiance.
