Why Larry takes Acetyl L-Carnitine and alpha-lipoic acid

In 2002, Larry was in an auto accident in early 2002. See our About Us page. He suffered a closed head trauma with whiplash. His cognitive abilities slowly started to decrease, and his decision making capability gradually went from excellent to sub-standard. This was most noticed by Phyllis.

Larry read an article titled "The End of Ageing" in the November 2003 issue of Readers Digest about Bruce Ames and his research into rolling back aging in rats. Since Dr. Ames was the originator of the Ames Test used by the pharmaceutical firm where Larry worked, there was credibility.

Dr. Ames had been using Acetyl L-Carnitine and alpha-lipoic acid to combat cell damage in rats. The human possibilities were noted. Larry and Phyllis talked it over and decided Larry had nothing to lose except a little money and Larry had plenty to gain. In early 2004, Larry was consulting a second neurologist who advise Larry that there was no reason to be taking an antidepressant if he was not depressed (Larry's main neurologist had prescribed this for off-label reasons). Larry could not see that the antidepressant had really helped, so he discontinued. Larry continued the Acetyl L-Carnitine and alpha-lipoic acid. Within a week, his reasoning ability was back to good. Larry never got back to "excellent" decision making, but it is back to "good". He has continued taking Acetyl L-Carnitine and alpha-lipoic acid.
